Backgammon Setup
Start correctly by learning the backgammon starting position. The layout is symmetric for both players.
Starting position
Each player’s 15 checkers are placed as follows:
- 2 on the 24-point (far point)
- 5 on the 13-point
- 3 on the 8-point
- 5 on the 6-point (home)
Home and outer boards
Each player has a home board (points 1–6) and an outer board. The goal is to gather every checker into the home board and bear them off.
Checkers travel in opposite directions, each toward its own home.

How many checkers per point at start?
2 on the far point, 5 on the 13-point, 3 on the 8-point, and 5 on the 6-point (2-5-3-5).
Is the setup the same for both players?
Yes, it is symmetric; each mirrors the other relative to their own direction.
