Backgammon Opening Moves
The first move shapes the game. Learn the strongest opening rolls and how to play them.
Strong openings
Some opening rolls let you make a point right away:
- 3-1: make the 5-point — a powerful block
- 6-1: make the bar point (7-point)
- 4-2: make the 4-point
- 6-5: run a back checker to safety (lover’s leap)
Goal on the opening
The priority is usually making safe points and avoiding blots. On rolls that can’t make a point, advance to safe spots.
